Luis Guerra was born in Texas, and spent his early years playing drums and piano before picking up the bass at the age of 11. He then began an intensive process of learning the instrument, which has included lessons with Dr. David Neubert, John Fremgen, and Reuben Rogers. He began playing music professionally at the age of 15 and has since gone on to play with musicians Marc Ribot, Kevin Hays (Blue Note Recording Artist), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees), Peter Buck (REM), Felipe Vieux, Jason Marsalis, Coleman Barks, Bobby Shew, Dr. James Polk, Tosca Tango Orchestra, Orcestra La Tribu, Doug Lawrence, and Money Mark (Beastie Boys). He has also recorded and toured with Grammy nominated songwriters Alejandro Escovedo, Kim Richie, Patty Griffin, and is a voting member of the National Association Recording Arts and Sciences.
He currently produces music with a wide range of artists. Recent projects include Circus Luminous 2010 - musical director and composer, and co-composer for the musical, "Coal" produced by Molly Sturges (2008 United States American Artist award winner) and Little Globe. Luis is the staff composer and sound designer for Fonografia Collective. And he freelances as composer/music producer for advertising agencies including Mudhouse Advertising.
His collaboration with Michael Longoria in the group, Terremoto, has released three recordings and toured all across the USA performing in historic venues including Boston's Orpheum and San Francisco's Warfield theater. Their most recent recording, "Cocinando" features Tom Waits's guitarist, Marc Ribot and Grammy nominated Patty Griffin on vocals. Check out samples here.
As well as performing, Luis produces and composes music for mixed media from his Albuquerque based Terremoto Studios. His studio utilizes Pro Tools 8, Logic 9, Reason 5, Ableton 8 Live, East West Orchestra, and Native Instruments platforms, as well as Focusrite, Universal Audio. It is an online studio that offers services for clients all over the world.
Recently completed musical scores include a Circus Luminous 2010 for the Lensic in Santa Fe, NM, "Flexion" for the Miami Center for the Performing Arts, and an independent documentary Green Spider Films produced "Woven Songs of the Amazon". His music has been broadcast on NPR's "Latino USA," The BBC's "Global Hit," and he has been one of the featured musicians in a profile for New Mexico Public Radio series focusing on Jazz musicians entitled "Jazz of Enchanment". He also has numerous credits as both a session musician, producer, and educator. He is an instructor for Project Music which teaches production to incarcerated youth within the Bernalillo County Detention Center.
